Monday afternoon was the first full-length rehearsal. Jade was going through her routine, a modern dance set to a Chinese melody which had been recorded—in a new arrangement—by an American jazz group. Jade had a cassette of the music playing as she rehearsed. Elizabeth slipped into a seat next to David. He had his head propped on his hands as he stared glumly up at the stage.

"Your poster is great, David. You really captured Jade's gracefulness perfectly," Elizabeth said.

David shrugged. "Yeah, I thought I understood her. But now I think I'm wrong," he said unhappily.

Elizabeth raised her eyebrows. "David, what's wrong? You seem really upset."

David turned to her. "Listen, Liz. Tell me the truth. If you were like Jade—real star material, with everything going for you—you wouldn't go out with someone like me, would you? Someone from a poor family whose mom works as a maid?"

Elizabeth stared at him. "David—" She didn't know what to say. "That wouldn't matter at all! And I'm sure it doesn't to Jade, either. She's not a snob."

David sank back in the chair. "I wouldn't have thought so, either, Liz. But if she isn't a snob, then why won't she go out with me? I've asked her a couple of times, and she keeps turning me down, giving me stupid excuses. I think she likes me—she sure acts like she does. But she won't go out with me." He paused for a moment. "I think she's ashamed to be seen with someone from a background like mine."

Elizabeth looked closely at David, her eyes full of compassion. "I'm sure you're wrong," she said, turning back to watch Jade execute a perfect dance step on stage. Jade was so beautiful, so graceful, yet so shy . . . how could she possibly be a snob? Elizabeth was sure there was no way Jade would spurn David just because his family didn't have a lot of money, or because his mother worked as a housekeeper.

But doubt nagged at Elizabeth, too. The truth was she didn't know Jade very well. She had noticed the sophomore didn't really seem all that open, or willing to share anything of herself. Was it possible David was right?
